Travelling just around the riverbend, writing about it as I go. Follow my travels and read about it below
So I did not go out and celebrate Brazil independence as I had envisioned. Mainly cause I had nobody really to go out with. Most of my friends I had made are travellers or were away and the one resort had returned to the party hostel from where I once came, however I was not up for that, financially or emotionally.
This may sound sad but actually, I was not and I do not feel alone. Instead I got a bite to eat, met some Brazilian who is a B-list celeb in Portugal, weirdly, before watching the Brazil game alone in a bar. They cared as little as we do for friendlies.
So I returned to spend my evening with a chocolate bar, a beer and Captain America. I could not have been happier, this whole weekend has been spent training for the job, reading, coffees, beers and Netflix.
Now that the job is in place and the apartment is sorted for the next 3 months, I finally relaxed. I watched films and series and found myself engrossed in them (honestly almost crying at some terrible movies). I read books without wandering off the page, it would occasionally drift but only due to the thought provoking nature of the book and in the way it intended. My head was silent apart from the constant sound of songs in my head, which I fear will be harder to rid.
That is what I was looking for, back home I had way too many voices in my head and discussions going on. I couldn't relax. I needed to have some alone time and this weekend has done exactly that. I could have done this anywhere, ye, but that is also the point, I can do it anywhere so why not Rio, where I can also hit up the beach and the town when I feel like it for 6 months. I miss many people back home but am in frequent contact with lots of them and hopefully they understand that I needed to do this for me, to take a step forward and begin my life (I'm so gutted I cant explain it to Lola). I'll be back, probably.
I still have thoughts and discussions fill my head but those thoughts at the moment are the visa sitch, and whether I should leave for a month to Buenos Aires, so I can return and stay hopefully for carnival or just get the extension and leave a month before. If I leave it would stifle my settling here for almost 2 months but then, carnival. Before it was where should I live, by the beach or in the student area with 3 Brazilians.
But these are great problems, I compare it to being a football manager having 3 brilliant strikers, the Argentina problem. Do I play Messi, Higuain, Aguero or Tevez (once upon a time). Obviously I'd play Aguero and have Messi somewhere, but the point is, its a great problem and if my head can fully focus on that, everything seems easier. Decisions seem clearer (which is not my forte).
So I have chosen to live with the 3 Brazilians for the next two months, learn Portuguese and read more books and drink more coffee, from there we'll see how it goes, hopefully stay 3 more + carnaval and then hopefully on to another South American country, learn Spanish and explore another culture. I'm digging old civilizations atm, maybe Peru. I don't know, but the fact these are the thoughts echoing in my brain, is a good thing.
The slow life of hammocks and coffee shops suits me.
